About to get an IUD.?!

Question: I am really nervous about the pain. I am going to get the copper, because every other form of hormonal bc does not work with me at all. I am just really scared, because I have not had a child yet. I am wondering, how the insertion went for other childless women! Please give as many details as possible. Also, how often does it come out? I heard it is very common during the first 3 months to reject, but is it really that bad? Thanks!

It's not very common to reject them. Obviously higher in women who have not had children but still not that bad. You may get heavier periods for a while though.

I have had kids, but I figure I'll tell you how it felt, I'm not sure what the difference would be. My Doctor basically did what felt at first like a regular pelvic exam. They have a straw like tool that they insert through the cervix to place the IUD. She was very quick and it was a sharp almost pinching pain (if you have ever had very rough sex and bottomed out. . . it's a little like that only more intense). I got very dizzy for the minute that it was in. . . I suppose as a reaction to the pain. But it was over quick and I was just a little sore up in there for a day or so. Absolutely worthwhile when you think that you have so many years to not worry about birth control! yay!!

Hope that helps a little!

I would do some more research I wasn't aware that they fall out. Never had one though.

I would suggest talking to your gynocologist prior to the procedure. He/She will use a topical anesthetic to numb the cervix prior to insertion. You may experience mild discomfort and spotting is common after this procedure. Hope this helps.

Secondary infection and vaginal discharge are very common with IUD. You have mentioned Hormones.Have you ever tried long acting progesteron injection? Try to arrange to get vaccinated against HPV.This may protect you from cervical Cancer. It does not prvent sexually transmitted diseases (STD).

To be honest... it hurt like a *****!!! But it's been the best birth control for me yet! (tried pills, patch and ring).

When they first "clamp" you just automatically get cramps (like PMS)... not extremely painful. The doctor told me the cramps would go away in 10 minutes or so but I cramped on and off for 2 weeks. I also spotted (very light) for 6 months straight.

Even though I went through all this crap I love my IUD. I don't get my period anymore (well one day a month of light spotting--don't even have to wear a pad). And there's no maintenance except checking your strings every so often in the shower.

It's not really THAT bad....
