I would consider sex and tampons under the same "abstinence" rule (as in do not do/use) in this instance.
The precaution against sex is so that bacteria cannot be introduced into the partially open cervical os and then into the uterus, thereby preventing a very serious condition called PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease).
If in doubt, call your doctor. But to be on the safe side, just use pads for the week's time, should you get your period.
