Is Norethisterone a contraceptive?!

Question: I was given norethisterone to stop spotting, and I wanted to know if I could start another kind of contraceptive while taking it. I've found a lot of things on here, and on Google, that say it is the "mini pill" and a contraceptive itself.

Is there two types of norethisterone? I'm using "Utovlan" brand, is that the non-contraceptive brand?

What this article says is that it can prevent pregnancy, but it is not as effective as a progesterone/estrogen combination pill. You should talk to your doctor about what you should be doing. They might just switch you over to a regular estrogen/progesterone pill from what you're on in order to help improve the effectiveness of it as birth control. I would guess that they aren't going to give you norethisterone along with a regular birth control as then you would be getting a double dose of progesterone (which is what norethisterone is).
