Birth control..?!

Question: I have never been on birth control before and me and my boyfriend practice the pull out method and I know that is not a good way. I was wondering what is the best birth control out there. I am 20 and My mom has a history of blood clots. That is the only risk I can think of that I would like to stay away from. So any suggestions?

best person to talk to is your doc. they'll be able to get you on something. but have him wrap up everytime. pulling out does not work. not even a little. don't let yourself think that it does. i don't mean to scare you, but you are taking pretty serious risks if you don't want to get preggo. use condoms or don't have sex.

The pill or mini pill is most common for young people.

Eesh use a condom hun

Otherwise go talk to your doctor to go on the combined pill. It's the most effective way so long as you carefully stick to the instructions.
With the family history of blood clots you just dont want to go on the progesterone only pill (mini pill) or the depo (which is a three monthly progesterone only injection)

Why not have a diaghram? You smear it with spermicide, pop it in before sex, and leave it for so many hours afterwards. No crazy hormones or risks involved and you still have the sensitivity of not using a condom.

I was on the pill for 7 years in my late teens and early 20s, before this I never had any probs with my periods and had no pain and they were regular. After the pill they were never the same, very irregular and heavy, very bad pains, totally unpredicatable, and although they settled down a little I can't help but feel being on the pill for that long had its effect. I now stick to methods that don't mean putting drugs into by body, the condom, the cap etc. I feel much safer with that. I'd quicly find something rather than the withdrawal method though, i tried that a couple of times and got caught and had a termination and it's always best to avoid this method of 'contraception' if at all possible!!

I've been on the pill for around 4 years and (touch wood) had no probs. If you're not likely to remember to take it tho, it's probably not the best thing for you! Speak to your doctor, as the clot risk may not be so high.

I'm sure they have a pill that would work for you. and by the 'pull out' method you are playing a dangerous game, because the pre ejaculate is enough to get you pregnant, if you really dont want to risk the pill there are female condoms and diaphrams (spell check). good luck

I been on the pill (trinessa) for over a year now and I've been alright with it, no probs knock on wood.

I'm on "Implanon." it's a nifty little implant that was inserted under my arm last summer. (No pain during insertion, and only a little bit sore later that day.) They say it's 99% effective but it's actually 100% effective. No reports of pregnancies have ever been made with this product. I've had no side effects (Except no babies! :) ) My husband and I love it. It is expensive up front but it LASTS 3 YEARS!!! In the long run it actually cost less than the pill!!! I highly recommend you looking into this. They have been used in Europe for years and are slowly gaining poplularity in the US. Your gyno can do it for you in one short visit or they can send you to someone who is trained to do it. Big thumbs up for "Implanon."

I think as far as risks are concerned, that varies between individuals. What might seem perfect for me could be all wrong for you. I'm 29 and I've been wearing the patch going on 6 years with no problems, but others from what I've heard have had issues with the patch. The best thing is to get with your doctor. You and he/she know your health better than anyone else. By the way, if birth control does concern you, try the female condom if you don't mind wearing it yourself.
