I've never used a tampon before. HELP! (girls only, please)?!

Question: Okay, well, I started my period in October, and I'm an early bloomer; I'm still 6 months from being twelve ;-S.

I already knew it would happen and stuff, and it's a good thing that I caught it off-guard at school. I just called my mom, etc.
She hadn't bought pads yet, but she did, and so now I'm experienced a little bit, you know? Well, she told me that she isn't ready for me to use tampons just yet.
And I told her: "What if I am mom? It's bad!"
And of course, I tell her when I need more pads and what not, and when I'm on my period, but I think I wanna leave it to myself when I'm on my period, you know? Man, she told almost every female in the family; like I wanted them to know!?!?!
So, my mom said that the next time I get it, which should be here pretty soon, that I can use tampons. Our teacher last year in the sex-ed class told us how and stuff, but I kinda forgot.

Thank you SOOO much. I need to know these things, you know?
When I'm menstruating I CAN'T be unprepared----

in the tampon box little mama theirs directions just look at those it gives you step by step directions and you probable wanna go for the lowest absorbency until you can get the hang of it

LOL @ YOUR MOM not being ready for YOU to use tampons yet... what does she have to be ready for? It's not going to affect her in any way, shape or form... LMAO

There are step by step directions inside the box. try going to www.tampax.com they have lots of information on periods and the use of tampons. Also try www.beinggirl.com

I don't see a need to use tampons. If anything, they're more inconvienent than pads, and being 12 years old, there's definitely no need for them. They can get you sicker a lot faster than pads. Your school nurse will have a supply of pads, and if you don't carry one yet, get a purse and hide a couple in there for your day at school.
And don't worry about your mom telling your family. Every woman gets a period, and at some point, the boys will learn to accept it!

You shouldn't have any problems using tampons, but if you're going to use something other than pads, I would recommend a menstrual cup, like the Diva Cup. They're reusable, so they save money. I wish I had found out about it a long time ago. It's so much more comfortable than tampons.

If you decide to go with tampons, make sure you read the instructions really well. It might take a few tries to get it just right.

If your mother is hesitant about tampons because of breaking the hymen, make sure she knows that it's very unlikely for a tampon to do that.

Again, I recommend this : http://www.divacup.com

Good luck!

I use OB tampons and the instructions are very helpful. Check out the site for the online version. My main tip for you is that you've inserted it right if you don't feel it at all.

There are clear instructions on how to use tampons inside the box you buy - no one here can explain exactly how to insert one. Just make sure you relax when you're putting one in, because if you're tense, your muscles will tighten up and make insertion difficult. I don't see a reason for you not to use tampons as long as you're comfortable with them, but it could take a while before you get used to using them.

yea I kinda know how u feel. i'm turning 12 in 2 months and I got mine in sept. just a month be4 urs. But my mom understood and u know she lemme use em and stuff. anyway moms r lyk dat smtimes

There's no reason why your mother shouldn't allow you to use a tampon. Research shows that it is highly unlikely for the hymen to be traumatized while inserting a tampon.

As far as knowing what to do, just read the instructions in the box. It has various diagrams and explains step by step exactly what you need to do. I would suggest starting with a "normal absorbency" to start out with. At your age you will probably have a light flow, and a "super absorbency" will not be necessary. I prefer to use the new Tampax pearls, I feel they have the best coverage against leaks. When I first got my period about 5 years ago I used Kotex, which is also a good brand. Maybe you could try one of those. Also, generally a plastic applicator goes in more smoothly than a cardboard one, but again, it's all personal preference. Just remember to relax when inserting, and insert straight up. The only way that it should be uncomfortable after inserting, would be if it is inserted at an angle.

I would say give it a try, it may not be for you. It also could take a few tries till you get the whole process down pat.

Good luck!
