You need to give the BC pills at least 4/6 weeks before having unprotected sex. This gives your body time to adjust to the sudden change in horemones.

If you start taking the pill in the first five days of your cycle (the first day of your period is day one), you are protected IMMEDIATELY.

If you start at any other point in your cycle, you are protected after SEVEN DAYS of active pills. There is no need to wait a month, a cycle, two months, etc., etc. You are protected after seven days of active pills. According to Planned Parenthood:

"If you start the combination pill within five days after the start of your period, take the first active pill of the first pack. You will not need to use a back up method of birth control. You are protected against pregnancy immediately.

If you start the combination pill at any other time during your menstrual cycle, take the first active pill of the first pack. Use another method of birth control if you have vaginal intercourse during the first week of combination pill use
