The Devil Must have thought up the idea of tampons.?!

Question: I am a 23 year old virgin. (For personal reasons)
And I have a health issue so that I've only had about half a dozen of periods over the span of my lifetime. Sounds great, right? But in reality it's not because one day I would like to possibly have children, and without a regular period, conception will be difficult.
But the point is, I decided that because I will be forced to be regular by my doctor, I'll venture into the world of tampons.
I mean look at all those smiling models on the TV commercials. So I buy a pack, highly recommended, and insert the smallest one. Easy enough I thought. But then I could feel pressure, and then I decided that I would not be comfortable in class if I wore it so I tried to remove it. I thought I was gonna die. After twenty minutes and after uncomfortable amounts of pain, it came out.
So my question is, is that normal?
I followed all the directions.
Why did it hurt on the way out, when it slipped in relatively fine (a bit snug though)?

Hello there...

First of all there are a few important things to remember when using tampons..

1. Always wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and plenty of soap, before inserting a vagina. There is a slight risk of developing Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) which can be fatal without treatment. It can be caused by bacteria on the woman's hands who inserts a tampon.

2. Never use a tampon if you are not having a period. Tampons should not be "practiced" with unless you are currently having a period. Additionally they are not meant to use to absorb occassional discharge. Pantyliners are made for that.

3. Tampons should never be left in for more than 6 to 8 hours also because of the risk of TSS.

4. It is important to choose the right absorbency for your flow. If you have a light period, do NOT use the Super Absorbency ones... because this increases your risks of getting TSS.

Now that we got that out of the way... I am assuming you are definately having a period now... Also assuming that you decided to remove it almost immediately after inserting it because of the discomfort. By the way, its normal to feel pressure or discomfort the first time of wearing a tampon... because your vagina is not USED to having something inside it. After a few times of wearing one... that feeling will be less noticeable and in time you wont notice it at all.

Because you decided to remove it right away after just inserting it... the tampon did not have adequate time to absorb the menstrual fluid... therefore the tampon which is made of cotton was too dry and it stuck to the walls of the vagina, which caused the pain.

Also please be sure to re-read the package insert to double check that you inserted it properly... and don't forget to remove the applicator after you are done... the applicator is the plastic or cardboard piece that holds the cotton tampon inside... it should be removed after insertion of the tampon.

Good Luck,
Nurse Angie, RN

It sounds like you need to ask your OB/GYN. You should not have difficulty in removing it.

Were you on your period? If a tampon is still mostly dry when you try to take it out it will hurt.

same thing with me but im 14 and i cant fit it in! it slips out. i keep having to ask my mom on how to do it!every time i sit down slip it comes out. after you try it for a while with takin it out ull get used to the pain. ive done it in and out for a whole hour and i got used to it

Try pads.

if the tampon was still dry when you took it out its going to be painful to remove. you can't feel any pain when you insert it correctly and when you remove it after it's done its job. my advice: practice makes perfect! oh and its ALOT more comfortable and practical than bulky pads. they're like diapers to me:(

because it was dry when you pulled it out - therefore the friction was more and caused pain.

usually the tampon is full of blood and you can tell by tugging a little on the string if it is ready to come out - it is much easier to take out a full tampon than a dry one.

did you use one with an applicator? it might be easier to use an applicator until you get used to them. but you said it was uncomfortable - this suggests you didn't put it in far enough. if you are not using an applicator, you really need to get all of your finger pushing the tampon in until the base of the opening is at the entrance. if you are using an applicator, the ridges of the applicator (where you hold on to) need to be in as far as they can while you still hold on to them and then push the inside tube up as far as you can and remove both tubes.

you said it wasn't too bad to put in, but just in case youhave more trouble, remember not to push straight up, but angle the tampon slightly towards your lower back.

if it didnt absorb anything then it was still dry...which may be the cause of your pain

you should not have any problems taking out tampons, you should definetely ask your doctor

Tampons are way better than pads to me. I think the reason it hurt so bad coming out is because you didn't keep i there long enough. It slipped in fine because you had the plastic piece over it. It's something you have to get use to. Yes, at first, it will definitely be uncomfortable, but from my experience, I love tampons because they're better when it comes to what type of form fitting clothes you're wearing or sports you're playing etc, etc..

Because tampons are incredibly absorbent and will absorb all moisture until it is completely saturated. If you remove it before it gets a chance to become saturated, it will be difficult and painful to remove because of the dryness. If you have to do that again, use some lube.

The probable reason for you being able to feel pressure from it is because you did not insert it far enough up. Make sure you read the instructions in the box carefully before trying again so that you can know what the right insertion depth is.

If your period is a light flow, I don't recommend using tampons because you will come across the problem of them being diffacult to remove often.

Well my first time was a bit painful. The thing is I didn't have it in all the way and i didn't leave it in long enough to absorbe anything. So you need to have it all the way in and leave it in a few hours. If you have it in all the way then the pain should go away pretty quick. And just a tip cardboard tampons aren't the best.Try getting something like tampax pearl, they're seriosly the best!

becuase they expand inside you. So then they are bigger to pull out. They are disgusting things - i agree.

As for irregular periods. I have polycystic ovaries, and in my whole life have had about 10 periods. yet somehow i have 5 beautiful children, and one on the way. When you decide to get married, contact me and i can give you some suggestions how to improve fertility (without drugs).

The pill, or other medications that regulate periods, do so by interfering with that part of the body. i don't advise them, because they don't actually improve fertility, they just make you feel more normal .. (thats what my doctor told me when I asked).

I had exactly the same thing as that and everyone who i talked to just told me it was still dry but then my mum had the genious idea to go to the gyno and it turned out i needed like an operation.. which was a hideous idea to me at the age of 13 but looking back i am so glad that i did because if i hadn't it would have stopped me even having sex.. seriously if your that worried then go to the gyno.

Did you remove it from the applicator ?

You are supposed to insert the applicator and then press a release so that the tampon ( cotton part) stays in but the outer "guide", that allows easier insertion, is removed and thrown away. The string is attached to the tampon to remind you it is there, it is in place and to assist with removal .
And that is only to be done when you have a menstrual flow that is enough to soak a pad.
