Intraocular lens implant and G Forces?!
Question: Intraocular lens implant and G Forces?
I have an intracilar lens implant in my left eye, and have since I was 4 years old, I have 20/40 in my left eye and 20/20 in my right eye. My doctor said that I cannot have 2 jobs other than that this will not restrict me. The jobs are an astronaut and a fighter jet pilot. I have accepted this but I am curious... what is it with these two occupations that makes it so I cannot have one of these jobs. I know it has something to do with G forces, but is it positive or negative g's or something else. Also driving a car you can experience g's and getting in a crash you can experience even more g's. And then what about roller coaster? I heard when an astronaut goes into space they experience like 10g's and then in a car cash you can experience way more, can someone clear this up for me. What is it that makes having this implant makes it so I cannot be an astronaut?
Answers:
It's because of the life threatening possibility that something will happen to your eye during flight, especially sustaining g-forces. It is a lot like LASEK surgery. Only PRK is allowed because in LASEK they place a little flap on your eye that if it were to move and mess up your vision could be a big problem. I'm not sure on the specifics though. There are many many obscure disqualifiers for military aviation. Good luck
