Causes of myopia ? What are they ? How can I fix myopia ?!

Question: Causes of myopia ? What are they ? How can I fix myopia ?
Some people say that nearsightedness is heredity, but others say that there are many things that may cause myopia. What are they ? When I was diagnosed with myopia I was immediately advised to wear eye glasses. Since wearing glasses or contacts will limit physical activities and eye surgery is not my choice either, I'd like to know other alternative methods to fix my eye problem.

It is widely known that myopia is a genetic defect but most of the cases it is the result of bad habits such as extensive reading or straining of the eyes. A combination of the above two factors actually can progress myopia very easily. Many experts found that reading in long period, using dim light frequently can also contribute to this condition.

Surprisingly some studies found that people who have higher levels of education are more prone to nearsightedness, probably due to the fact that higher education spend a lot of their time in reading or browsing in their computer.

Many scientists, however, believe that nearsightedness is often caused by lack of oxygen and nutrients in the eye muscles. This will make the eye ball longer than normal or the cornea of the eye is steeper than normal causing the images to focus in the vitreous of the eye rather than on the retina at the back of the eye. So it is important for you to keep good blood circulation throughout the area of the eye by taking eye exercises and adapting good habits. Remember that if the strain of the eye muscles continues, it will flattens out the eyeballs and the lens will lost their normal shapes because they will bend more and more.

Many eyesight problems have been successfully improved by a applying natural method, such as adding healthy food to your daily menu and doing regular eye exercises.
If you understand the underlying causes of myopia and know the way to treat your precious eyes, you would easily be able to see the world clearly and enjoy carefree life.

The main cause of myopia is that your eyeball is the wrong shape so the light doesnt' focus. There are many rumours out there that using computer screens/TV , wearing /not wearing glasses , eating certain foods makes a difference. All scientific studies show no evidence that this is the case. If it was possible to fix myopia short of surgery noone would wear glasses. This is why there is a rush of people paying for surgery.

Glasses do limit some physical activities, but contacts do not limit any. I have worn contacts for over 40 years and have yet to find a physical activity I can't wear contacts for. I do use dailies for swimming/snorkelling so that they can be thrown away after. What physical activities do you believe you can't wear contacts for ? Many sports stars are dependent on contacts.

The only known cause of myopia (other than genetic conditions which cause really severe, disabling myopia) is Juvenile Stress Myopia which can develop in your early teens from all the bookwork at school.

Excessive VDU use can cause eye strain but not myopia itself.

Contact lenses, if fitted correctly, won't limit you in any way. You can even get daily disposable lenses so you don't have to bother cleaning them. However you DO have to make sure you have up to date glasses too, as you need to rest the eyes one day a fortnight - and if you have any eye problems (like infections) you need to be able to wear your glasses.

Laser surgery is an option but there are a lot of limitations with it and there aren't a lot of long term studies yet - personally not my choice at all.

There are no exercises, drugs, diets or anything like that which will help. (however smoking can cause no end of problems for your vision later in life)

EDIT: For the record you cannot get myopia from reading too much in dull light as one post says. This may cause a bit of eye strain which leads to the discovery and diagnosis of myopia - but doesn't cause it.

I'm a dispensing optician.

you are really lucky - no-one has mentioned the nonsensical eye exercises that usually come up with a question like this! There are no other methods; glasses, lenses or surgery. Go for one of the first two.

the only activity that I can think of that isn't totally suitable for contact lenses is swimming, and goggles usually protect lenses. Or you can get prescription goggles. Other than that it is the 21st century and short sight doesn't restrict you.

To be honest, I know it is such a hassle wearing glasses, but it will help. It may not cure myopia, but it will stop it from getting worse. I have myopia as well, and I got it from reading too much in dull lighting. I would advise trying your glasses for a couple of days at least, and you will notice a difference. You are less likely to suffer from eye strain and migraines as well.

Own experience.

You can try some eye strengthening exercises, but they have never been proven to work. Google them. Wearing contacts does not limit any physical activities that I know of. Many professional athletes wear contacts.
