You really can by looking at any screen for too long. It's scientifically proven.
It is not true. There is no evidence I know of that suggests that TV can cause permanent damage to your eyes. It is possible for you to strain your eyes, or cause eye fatigue by sitting too close to one but it's just a muscular fatigue effect like going for a run. The muscles that contract your lenses quickly recover their strength with some rest.
EDIT: After seeing other responses. Modern TVs do not give off any dangerous radiation that can damage the eyes. Old TVs could give off X-Rays, which COULD damage the eyes. Such TVs are no longer standards compliant in most countries.
You can strain them, which causes tension headaches and dry eyes, which is a pain in the backside!
TV damages mainly the brain.
