Question: Problem with first pair of specs, is this to be expected?

I reckon 48 hours of getting used to a new perscription. After that its back to the optician. Its always possible for a perscription to be wrong or for the lenses themselves to be wrong. Astigmatism seems to make this particularly likely. As you say your left eye is o.k. so sounds liek the other one is wrong. It can't damage your vision though adn you do need to try for 48 hours.
Just for piece of mind, you could have the place that made them just re-check the glasses to make sure the prescription is filled correctly, and then if that checks out, wear them for at least week of steady wear, no on and off stuff. If your vision does not improve though, call the office that did the exam and explain that you've worn them for a week and your right eye is still blurry . They should have you come back in for a refraction check to see if the prescription needs to be modified.
It is possible that one eye has astigmatism and not the other, or has a greater amount. It takes a little while for your brain to adapt to the vision you are getting with your new glasses, so it is not out of the ordinary to need some adjustment time.
You won't damage your vision even if the lens is wrong, you just won't see well.
Sometimes glasses take a while to get used to, but it could be that the lens for the right eye has the astigmatism correction (the cylinder part) on the wrong axis, or some other error. This happens occasionally, so if after a week or so, you still are not comfortable with them, definitely go back and have them looked at.
It does take some time when you first are corrected for astigmatism. It makes things look weird.
I'd guess that your right eye requires more correction than the left. It will take a bit of time to adjust.
If it goes on, contact your eye doctor.
