Most (but not ALL) spec wearers can wear contact lenses without any problem. There are some cases such as unusual prescriptions (not necessarily high powers), corneal damage, muscle balance problems etc which would cause you difficulties.
In other words, being strongly nearsighted does not mean you can't wear them.
There are so many different types of lenses now, for high powers, dry eyes etc - the best way to find out if you can wear them is to book a fitting with yor optician.
They'll do some tests, combine that with your prescription and advise you for definite, which ones will give you best vision and comfort while keeping your eyes healthy.

no, not just anyone. some conditions are not suitable for contacts
but "nearsightedness" is not one of them. the vast majority of nearsighted people are pretty good contact lens candidates, and the majority of current contact lens wearers are nearsighted
so go to the eye doc (US) or optician (UK) & try it!
