Do you both have the same brand, diameter and base curve? If so, the actual strength isn't that much higher; you might be able to get away with it temporarily until you can get more contacts. Some people think if you wear contacts/glasses that are too strong, it will make you more nearsighted but, I don't believe this. Anyway, you would only be doing it for a little while.
Now, you answer my question:
Why do people always wait until they are totally out of contacts before they get more?

Yeah, I suppose that happens sometimes. You might want to consider getting some glasses as back-up (even if you hate wearing glasses, you really need a pair for "emergency use") like if you got pink eye, scratched a cornea or some other reason you couldn't wear contacts for several days.
