YOU have to tell them what you want...but how do you know what will fit without having tried them...THAT is the problem.

It's a gamble as to whether what you order like that will work or not.

You are much better off to go to an optical store and look for what you want, and know that the fitting and adjustments will be done right.

Sure they appear cheap online...but that's because they are cheap...in all senses of the word.

The last fellow says, go to Lenscrafters...

Quite frankly...I wouldn't go near Lenscrafters...very expensive, among other problems.

what a horrible idea! go to LensCrafters - you can walk out with your glasses in an hour, they'll fit, and be ones that you picked out.

dont buy it online cuz then u wont really know if they look good on you and u wont really know if they fit well cuz u wont be able to try them on obviously because ur buying them online

The only critical measurement is the distance between your eyes (center of pupil to center of pupil)(pupillary distance or PD). You can measure this yourself with a ruler and a mirror, and if you're careful it will be accurate enough. Or watch what the optician writes down on the form next time you get glasses. As for fitting your nose, that can be a problem if you have an unusually-shaped nose. If most plastic frames in optical stores don't fit you, then don't risk ordering them online. Metal frames with adjustable nose pads are the safest.

When it comes to frame sizes, you should be OK if you select frames that are similar to one's you've worn previously. Most frames are marked with numbers in the form of 51-19-135. 51 would be the width of the lens, 19 the distance between lenses, and 135 the length of the temples. You may find the 51-19 numbers on the bridge of the frame, and the length marked on the temple. None of these are critical, unless you have an unusually large head. If you have a very strong prescription, choosing a frame that centers the lenses on your eyes will help minimize lens thickness and weight; that just means selecting a frame where lens width and distance-between-lenses add up to be close to the pupillary distance. If you have such a strong prescription, you're safer to have the glasses fitted by an optician, but on-line glasses might be OK as a back-up pair.

Name brand frames online aren't always such great deals; I've found better pricing locally for my last couple of pairs. Check out some independent "mom and pop" opticians; often they have fairer prices than the big chain stores that spend millions on advertising and gimmicks.

There are several reasons not to. If you go local you have the opportunity to try the frames on and be sure they can be fit comfortably, and that you actually like the way they look. If they break you generally have a warranty for repair or replacement. While making eyeglasses is not rocket science, it does require knowledge to provide accurate lenses and proper frame adjustment. Also what frame best suits a particular prescription, it makes a difference in thickness and weight for stronger corrections. This is also why a lot of states require licensure for opticians. If you buy online, how do you know you are not buying a discontinued frame which means if it breaks you can't get another and your stuck. If you do buy online, take them to your Doctor after you get them to have the Rx verified.
