My daughter is 21 and had an eye test and was told she has pigment behind her eyes and is being referred?

the hospital.
Can you tell me what this could be as she is worried and I am too.

I am assuming the pigment is located on the retina based on the information supplied in your question and my answer will be based on this assumption. If this is the case, my first thought runs to a nevus. This can be harmless, much like freckles on our skin. As with any pigmented mole or lesion, it should be monitored so as to catch the rare change to malignancy. Probably your daughter's eye care provider wants a specialist to evaluate her to make sure she is properly diagnosed and treated if warranted. I wouldn't worry until there is cause to. I send patients out for a second opinion all the time when it comes to retina, as this is a specialty in and of itself. In most cases, nothing sight threatening is occurring.
