And you wipe your eyes with your fingers, does that bring the sand out or push the sand further into your skull?

Not the sand that appears there when you wake up..but sand, from a beach or whatever.

Answers:

The danger with sand, or anything that gets into your eyes is scratching and doing damage to your cornea.

You probably were tearing also with sand in your eye...so that would help get the sand out of your eye. Sand cannot get back into your skull. The anatomy of the orbit (the bone and muscles around your eye) would keep that from happening.

Although, next time, try very hard not to rub your eyes so you do not cause scratches on your cornea. Scratching the cornea gives the opportunity for some "bugs" to settle in prior to healing...kinda like a deep scratch on your skin can if you do not treat it, which, worst case scenario, can cause corneal edema (this can heal and go away) and scarring (this is permanent), which leads to vision problems.

Let the tears do their thing. I used to take a bottle of plain saline solution with me to the beach just in case sand or saltwater irritated my eyes...not a bad idea to help rinse your eye.
