Answers:

If it comes on like a "thunderclap" then the UK's NHS Direct website suggests that you ring the emergency services.

There have been articles in the medical literature describing a sudden, severe headache that may mimic a thunderclap in its intensity and severity. Some researchers think that its a warning of an impending rupture of an aneurysm or weak blood vessel. Other researchers disagree with this opinion.

Since the nature of the headache by itself cannot allow distinction between benign and serious causes, it is best to go to your doctor and arrange a CT scan.

Sorry for the pessimistic reply. You'll find that the Internet is a great source of information, but it can also scare the hell out of you unnecessarily.

My advice would be to book an appointment to see a doc ASAP, and keep a diary/log of when it is occurring in the meantime to see if there are any patterns to what is triggering it off and what times they are occurring.

Hope any of this helps!

Best wishes
