If I stay up for 24 hours straight, do I need to sleep longer to catch up on lost sleep? or is 8 hours enough?

You can do it all at once on a weekend by sleeping 16 hours or just an hour or two a night until you catch up. Many people are chronically sleep deprived, and it shows in their moods, alertness, etc. Catch up as soon as you can.
