I have to have surgery and its my first time and im really scared. What do you go through?

Answers:

I understand your fear. I just had surgery a week ago....had my gallbladder taken out. It really wasn't that bad. You may be required to do some pretesting ahead of time...bloodwork, ekg, xray. it all depends on what your doctor(surgeon) orders, but make sure you check when and where to have it done.

On the day of surgery, you will be asked to change into a gown and cap...yes, very lovely. You will be interviewed by the anesthesia doc. Be very truthful and honest about everything you tell him...Do not lie about smoking or drinking or your weight....your life may depend on it. Your doctor will come in to check on you before he scrubs in. For me the worst part was when they started the IV. I just can't handle the thought of a needle in my hand. But the guy was good and it was not bad at all. Didn't feel a thing. He will give you something to relax you via the iv before surgery. Your family will be able to come in the holding room to visit with you... and once everything is done, they will wheel you to the OR.

Once in the OR, the surgical team will ask you to slide over to the table....and once you are settle there...the anesthesia doc will make sure you are comfortable and will give you Oxygen in a mask...then lights out! while you are out, the surgical staff will prepare your body for surgery. You will be intibated with a tube for breathing...but you won't remember anything. You will not wake up with a tube.

you wake up in the recovery room to nurses tell you to wake up. if at that time, you feel as though you are in pain.. They will also ask if youre nauseated. I told them that I was both and they gave me something good! They should have orders to give you pain medicine through the IV. Your throat may be sore and very dry afterwards...ice chips really help. Make sure you begin to take very deep breaths and cough to prevent fluid from accumulating in your lungs...very important.

The day before surgery keep your diet very lite. They may tell you nothing to eat after midnight....but i would cut yourself off around 3pm...

My very best wishes for you!
