Answers:
Rest: If you're in pain, stop exercising and don't resume until you can exercise again without pain. This could take seven to ten days, or longer depending on the severity of the strain.
Ice the area: You could place a freezing, wet towel over the area. Do this several times a day for 10 to 15 minutes.
Take anti-inflammatories.
Elevate the area.
Use heat: After a few days of rest, ice and anti-inflammatories, you can heat the area with a heating pad several times a day. When you resume exercise, heat the area before exercising and ice afterwards.
Stretch and strengthen: If pain is minimal, you can begin stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf (calf raises and the wall push up are good) immediately. Stretch your hamstrings too. If you're in pain, don't do any exercises until the pain subsides.
Wear a heel lift: This may bring immediate relief if your calf muscles have shortened.
See your doctor: If you're in a lot of pain and initial treatment doesn't bring much relief, you may have completely ruptured a muscle. This requires medical attention.
