went hiking Sunday, played basketball Monday...suffering in groin and hip now...almost can't walk ...48, not one to complain about pain but in turtle mode and hurting bad

you probably strained the muscles (i've done this working out before)
use a heating pad to help ease the soreness but make sure to only use it for about 10-15mins at a time and do not put pad directly on the skin.
you can also take ibuprofen (if not allergic) to help with the pain. it also has an anti-inflammatory in it to help reduce any swelling. take 200-400mg every 6 hours as needed but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours.
rest for a few days (no sports or exercise) and you should feel better
