What to expect , with knee arthroscopic surgery ??!

Question:

What to expect , with knee arthroscopic surgery ??

my wife is having arthroscopic knee surgery in 2 wks, ( anterior lateral horn of meniscus is shot ) what can she expect ?? what is the best way to plan for it ??

Answers:

I had arthroscopic knee surgery 2 years ago to remove some tissue and repair my meniscus.

1.) The doctor will make 2 small incisions in her knee (one for the camera, and one for tools)
2.) He'll insert the camera in one whole so he can see the inside of her knee on the television monitor, and he'll insert the tools in the other hole.
3.) He'll fix whatever he needs to repair, and then place 1-2 stitches in each incision
4.) She'll be given a TEDS compression sock to keep swelling down, and probably a little cooler it'll be filled with ice and water, plugged into the wall to keep cool, a little pad will wrap around her knee, and a tube will carry the ice water into the pad, to keep it constantly cold (needs to be replaced every few hours)
5.) She may get a knee brace, I didn't but each person is different
6.) She'll be fitted for crutches, and allowed to leave the same night
7.) She'll be told to rest, and take her pain meds as directed, she'll have a follow up to have her stitches removed, and she'll start physical therapy relatively fast.
8.) Surgery should be relatively quick - release from hospital will be as soon as she wakes up (if she's being put out, I chose to stay awake and watch), and can hold some food down without getting too nausous.
Hope this helped, email me if you have other questions. Good Luck.
