Surgery on Knee?!

Question:

Surgery on Knee?

I have to have knee surgery next month. My doctor said that they want to remove 2 pieces of torn cartilage, and then try to move my kneecap back to its rightful place. It is currently basically on the side of my knee instead of the front. I'm looking forward to not being in pain anymore, but was wondering how long the recovery would be? She said I could go back to work on Monday (with having surgery the Wednesday before) but that seems too soon to me, especially with it being my right knee and I have to drive. What would a more realistic time be? Should I apply for medical leave at work? Thank you!!!

Answers:

Depending on how fast you recover and where exactly the cartilage that they are removing it could be a fairly quick recovery where you could be back to work, but depending on what you do for work you may or may not want to go back that soon. I took a week off from school after I had my knee surgery which was a removal of arthritis from underneath my knee cap, redoing the tracking of my knee cap, and clipping the plica. You will have a lot of swelling in your foot and ankle from not having your leg up so if you will be standing a lot or sitting for a long time you may want to take some more time off of work just to be safe (like maybe a week or week and a half). You also may still be on crutches then...it took be about a week to get off of them, but I had to use them for about a month for anything of long distances. My knee was fairly back to normal within 6 weeks or so, but my body ended up reacting very badly to the surgery so I now some major neurological complications which I'm still fighting a year and a half later, but they are very rare so not something to be too worried about. Good luck!
