Sicko is and will have a strong impact on the health care reform debate and movement in the US. One problem we have faced for years is that health care has not been on the national agenda of the President or Congress. The press has also ignored the issue. Sicko is helping elevate the broken health care system in the US. Twenty minutes on Oprah for Sicko with 30 million viewers is an incredible amount of free press. The fact that Big Pharma and the Insurance companies are banding together to publicly try to discredit Sicko tells you they are fearful. If Sicko was ineffective they would ignore it.
Also some good news is that many Presidential candidates are discussing health care system change. This will become a central issue in the campaign. Our first chance for reform will be January 2009 when a new Congress and New President convene in DC.
In the meantime all of us citizens and activists have to press for national health care reform. Sicko is just one act on the stage that needs to be built on.
