I just recently suffered from a skull fracture and I wanted to know what to expe!

Question:

I just recently suffered from a skull fracture and I wanted to know what to expect.?

I was attacked and hit my head on a cement sidewalk fracturing my skull and giving me a concussion. I think eventually I'm going to be fine, but it's only been a couple of days (this happened in the early hours on 7/2/07). I did not have to have surgery (so far). So far it seems my only symptoms are headaches (infrequent), a clogged ear (that's where the blood is draining because the skin on my skull was not actually cut), and I just noticed yesterday that I've lost my sense of smell. I consider myself extremely lucky. I used to work in a hospital and realize this could have been so much worse, but I wanted to get an opinion from those who may have personal experience with this type of injury what I might expect in the future so that I'm not further surprised. Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

Answers:

My daughter had a severe depressed skull fracture after getting thrown from a car. The accident was 20 months ago.
She was borderline for surgery, but the Dr's decided to leave it because of her broken neck & other injuries. Her fracture ran from her temple over her ear to the back of her head. She has 2 dents you can stick your finger in, but the rest healed flat.
Mostly she had severe headaches. They have decreased over time. She was deaf in one ear, but that has since returned to normal. The Dr said that in 8 weeks the fracture would be totally healed. She also had bleeding in her ear & from her nose. She still gets headaches, bit it is unclear if they're from her head or her neck.
Other than that the head is fine.
It probably took around a year and half for her to be back to as good as she's going to get.
I think if you're not getting the severe headaches after this time, I think you'll be just fine. If your brain was going to swell, it would have happened in the first 24-48 hours.
Take care
