SIG, Which Way It Would Be Worded?!

Question:

SIG, Which Way It Would Be Worded?

So, SIG On A Perscription Means The Directions In Which You Are To Take YOur Meds. So Should It Say "SIG: Take As Needed" Or "SIG: As Needed" Or Either Way Is Ok

Answers:

The SIG (signatura) of a prescription should be exactly the directions the doctor included on the prescription. The pharmacist can add clarification. Using the word "take" is preferred but not absolutely necessary. If the patient is a young child or an animal, the word "give" can be used. "As needed" doesn't have enough detail for proper use. The SIG should include at least a dose, and if taken as needed (prn) preferably the maximum doses per day. It may also include a duration for use, although this may be limited by the amount (ie number of pills or mL) in the original Rx.
