I lie in my most comfortable position, i pretend i am on a sun lounger on a private beach, the sun is blazing down, the small breeze is rustling the leaves of the palm trees, the waves are gently lapping on the shore, the ice in my cocktail is chinking against the glass and i am totally relaxed. I go through that scenario stage by stage every night by imagining each thing one at a time and it's usually the last thing i think of - i'm gone
...which is a huge difference to how i used to get off to sleep - which was banging my head on my pillow!! lol. But when i moved in with my husband (then my boyfriend), that kinda drove him nuts so i couldn't do it anymore ;o)
I turn the light of and use a small torch to read with, this usually gets me drowsy. Alternatively, when i was younger i remember-although cliched-counting sheep did work! Or drink horlicks or warm milk, or take a bath to help get you more relaxed.
try reading the great gatsby, "one of the classics" they said, "a great read" they told me. WRONG, it put me to sleep in half a chapter! or there is always valium.

Some light exercise at bedtime often helps you to relax, unwind and switch off and that often improves your sleep.
