Can I take co-codamol for jaw ache?!
Question: Can I take co-codamol for jaw ache?
Answers:
Dr. Frank's opinion has been skewed by seeing too many addicts in his practice. You can take multiple Co-codamol pills, as long as you don't exceed the daily limit of paracetamol, as Codeine is harmless in doses of up to 60 mg in non-tolerant patients. Opiate tolerant patients can take 300mg daily, though more than two 8/500 pills would be inappropriate for minor acute pain.
Basically, take one of two if you need to, and don't worry about addiction until you start popping 50 at a time.
Again, don't take more than 8 pills in one day, as, at 500 mg paracetamol each, 8 pills equals the absolute daily limit of 4000 mg (4 grams) paracetamol a day. Best to not even come close to that number.
Have chronic pain, so I know all about opiates.
I would generally ALWAYS advise against the use of co-codamol. It is only 5% more potent than paracetamol, but as well as being quite addictive has other side effects as well.
GP for more years than I care to remember
