persistent swollen ankle?!

Question: Persistent swollen ankle?
I had a grade I sprain about three weeks ago. I was fine after about a week, but I hurt it again (completely my fault). I could walk on it right after and run the next day, but every time i bend my foot inwards, my foot hurts. It's still swollen (been almost 2 weeks since I 'resprained' it). I got HEM and it's not working. I've only done HEM for half a week, but three weeks is LONG to me. I'm willing to do anything to get back as soon as possible.

Right now, I'm aiming more at becoming injury free (ankle) than be injury free AND fully fit to play. I need to know what to do to rid of the swelling, and I can worry about rehab later.

Thank you!

Answers:

Have you checked, when you bend your foot "down", run your finger(s) firmy across the outside of the ankle to see if you may have bone spurs in there from the sprain.

I severely sprained my ankle in college (was very athletic) and the college, instead of taking me to a doctor (I guess to cover themselves and at that time I knew no better), they just stuck my whole leg in a clean trash can filled completely with ice and water (talk about "OW!").

Well, I was out on the running completely - the next day the whole leg swelled up like elephant lady and I was on crutches (from the school) for a few weeks.

It did finally go down, but I've always had these bone spurs in my ankle (can only see the swelling when I bend that foot forward).

As well, the sprain changed my way of walking which ultimately messed up my knee when, some years later I tried running again and it completely gave out on me. One leg is much longer than the other now.

Oh heck, now I'm 51, old, and crickity! lol I have degenerative arthritis in my lower lumbar where I herniated a disc years ago, degenerative arthritis at C-3 (almost to the point of bone-touching-bone) and just live with the pain.

Recommendation: Do whatEVER the doctor tells you to get completely healed, don't mess it up like I did by getting back into your sport before your ankle/leg is completely ready. Do the ice to bring down the swelling, too! Like running, it's a real mind-exerciser to keep your leg in that ice water! Let me tell ya!
