Besides a pulled muscle you many have irritated the joint where the rib attaches to the spine causing muscle spasms!. If you lift up your arms and put your hand on top of your head then cough, does it change your pain !?
I would not worry, I would get some help!. Ask your doctor to send you to a physical therapist!. They can give you stretches, therapeutic ultrasound, electrical stimulation, head, ice, massage, manual therapy including all sort of hands on types of treatment that could help you greatly!. I have treated a number of these cases over the years!. I have always found it helpful when patients had medicine to reduce the coughing as much as possible while treating the problem!.
I have also seen cases where the muscle got so irritated from coughing that even taking a breath hurt so much and the patient ended up having panic attacks!. In severe cases the pain last may last for a long time even after the coughing resolves!. Physical therapy should help a lot!.

Good luck, hope it helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, coughing can cause pulled muscles!. In older people, they can even fracture ribs!.

As far as what to do, there's not much!. It can take weaks for the strain to completely heal!. What you can do is avoid making it worse!. No bending over at the waist, no heavy lifting, no straining yourself!. The heat helps!. Try a hot shower and just stand with the water spraying on your back for a while!.

Other than that, it's just time!. Oh, and treat the cough!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
