The ear is a complex organ and consists of many nerves and transduction media!. By transduction I mean conversion of sound into mechanical to finally nervous energy!. Damage to any piece will bring in limitations to the range of hearing!. What you may be referring to is the tympanic membrane, this could be pierced!.
