Question: Was this a dream or did she really say she was putting a pain killer up my bum!?
I had surgery 3 days ago to remove my appendix and before i went into theatre im sure one of the surgeons told me they needed to put a pain killer up my bum but my mum says i was probably dreaming it!. I'm 13 if it makes a difference but do you think she really did say that or was i imagining/dreaming it!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm not sure why anyone would give you pain medication rectally if you had an IV in place!. Rectal suppositories are generally used for people who can't swallow or do not have IV access!. So if you did get a rectal suppository it may have been because you can't have anything by mouth right before surgery, and you didn't already have an IV!. If you were nauseated and had no IV access, the nurse might have given you an anti-emetic(anti-nausea) drug rectally!.
It does sound a bit odd, though!. I've been an OR nurse in America for almost 22 years and have never seen a 13 year old given a rectal suppository for pain control!. Very small children, yes, for tylenol, but not for anything else!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

because the rectal membrane is so thin, drugs absorb faster!. just like nasal membranes or the skin under your tongue!.
This is more a trick of druggies though than medical professionals!. the fastest route of administration is still IV!. They would have used that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You may have had it for nausea!. But!.!.!.!.you would have had an IV in!. Have your Mom ask the Doc when you go for your follow up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
