Question about fevers?!

Question: Question about fevers!?
My son has been running a fever since Monday and for some reason at night is when it is the highest!. During the day it runs from normal to 102 and during the night it runs from 101 to 104 the highest so far was last night which was 104!.9!. Tonight so far it is at 104!.5!.

I would like to know why is the fever so much higher at night then during the day!.

Just to let you know he is on an antibiotic for an ear infection and also possible strep throat!. He is 15 months old and I have been giving him motrin for his fever with tylenol in between per doctors orders!. I am going to call the doctor tomorrow and ask them to see him again because he has had this fever for so long I don't think the antibiotic is working!.

I am just wondering if anyone knows why fevers are so much higher at night then during the day!?

thanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

I wish i could give you a real explanation, but i'm not sure what the physiological reasons are for a spiking fever at night!. i do know that its very common for fevers to do that!.

As far as your son goes, I'm not a doctor, just a premed student who shadows a doctor!. From what I've learned so far though, the number, while not good, isn't the most important thing!. If your son is listless, delirious, etc whenever his fever spikes (which seems to be every night), it's definitely not good and you might want to give up on waiting for doc and go to the ER!. But if he seems happy enough, you're keeping him hydrated, and he's got a pink tongue/is urinating, he isn't as bad off as you might think!. You'd probably be alright waiting to call the doctor!. When his fever spikes at night, you can try putting him in a lukewarm to cool bath to try to keep his fever down/at least staying where it is!. Keep using the motrin and tylenol!. Don't hesistate to bother your doctor, that's what they're here for! but don't panic if you can't reach him during the night if your son seems alright!. Good luck, sorry i couldn't be more informative!. =)Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm not sure why his fevers are so much higher at night!. Is there a longer length of time between medication dosages at night!?
A fever of 104!.5 in a 15 month old is very serious!. If you are medicating him with both Tylenol and Motrin and his fever is still staying that high you should take him directly to your local ER!. I wouldn't wait until tomorrow to call your doctor!.
If you do decide to wait make sure he drinks alot of fluids and that he is urinating regularly!. You don't want him to get dehydrated!. Keep him as cool as possible!. That means no blankets!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with the comment from above!. And yes he should drink plenty of fluids!. Most people's body temp goes up at night!. It's just a natural thing for some people!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
