My almost 2 year old son was at a slid in gravel today, & hit the back of his he!

Question: My son was running with his cousins at a family get together today, & he(being almost 2)is still a bit unsure of his footing- needless to say,the bigger kids took the gravel 'turn' a bit steadier than he, & down he went.He hit his head pretty hard, & it bled for awhile.I(being a bit overprotective?)am still a bit upset over it.He has 3 lumps on the back of his head, one of which scared the crap out of me at first.Everyone keeps telling me I should stop worrying, he'll be fine...meanwhile..all I can think is concussion or something.I am closely keeping watch over him tonight and in the morning,if I am still unsure I am planning to take him in anyway.I am just SO frustrated with everyone jumping at me for being concerned. He bumped his head around 4:30-5:00pm or so & didn't go to bed until around 8:45(I kept him up a few minutes later than usual)After he hit his head,he seemed ok,'cept for being whinier than usual. He kept playing w/ cousins & he ate dinner w/us. I just wonder any advice??

The next time this happens or anytime there is bleeding you need to apply direct pressure to suppress bleeding. Elevation of the wound also helps. If it had been an extreme loss of blood then you should dial 911, apply pressure to the artery nearest the wound. A last resort (not generally recommended unless desperate) would be to apply a tourniquet using a sterile cloth if possible.

All of that being said, direct pressure to your kids wound(s) and ice for the swelling would have been the best bet. As long as he doesn't seem to be disoriented or sleepy and/or drowsier than normal there was probably no concussion, however it can be hard to tell considering how young he is and how much more difficult it is for him to articulate and/or understand what is going on with his body.

You did the right thing to watch him closely and keep him up a little longer. He is more than likely okay. But, I think you should always follow your gut and err on the side of caution; don't let ANYONE tell you "not to worry" and "just let it go" unless people refer to them as "Doctor" on a professional basis. Even then it is still YOUR kid and he relies on YOU.

Hope everything works out.

Hi. If he displays symptoms of dizziness, disorientation, sleepiness, nausea etc, then you should take him to the doctor immediately. They will get an X-ray done to make sure all is ok. Don't worry, it's very natural for you to be concerned. If others don't understand, then just ignore them.

Well, based on the story, he seems like he is coming along fine. I wouldn't assume concussion, because you'd have to take a pretty forceful hit to the skull in order to do so. I've taken many hits to the head and I only recall one being concussion material. (Falling off a mountain bike and not remembering why I woke up on the ground.) I'd check the swelling tomorrow, it should have subsided a bit by then. It will probably be a little sore, so you may want to give him an ice pack. Overall though, he should be fine. If he does exhibit strange behavior the next day, like dizziness or impaired motor skills (More impaired than a two year old normally is) - Then I'd consider having him get checked out.

Go And Get Him Checked Out, either by your local G P.
Or at the Emergency Room / Casualty Department at your nearest Hospital
You never know WHAT a blow on the head, however gentle, might lead to.
I hope it IS "nothing to worry about", but on the other hand it MIGHT be serious, Get him Checked Out , if only for your own peace of mind

Probably he will be fine yes. But just to be sure, and to put your mind at ease, take him to get checked out as soon as you can. A child's skull is not as strong as that of an adult, so brain damage can ccur much more easily in young children as a result of a head trauma. It would probably still take a lot, but wouldn't you rather put your mind at ease?

If there was no loss of consciousness then he'll probably be fine. Just keep a close eye on him, which i'm sure you're doing anyway. If there's any dizziness, disorientation or vomiting that's when you need to get him to the ER straight away. I'm sure he'll be fine, kids bump their heads all the time and they're resilient little creatures.
