You should get a cast. Depending on how bad it is...you may get a short cast or full arm cast. I would not suggest surgery. Tell them you want it to heal naturally first.
the most they may do is give you medication for the pain if that. i mean you already have something on it so i dont think there is much more they can do
It depends on the break. If it's a clean break, he'll just put a cast or splint on it for 6-8 weeks.
If it's a splintery break, you may need surgery. After surgery you'll be ready to go within a week or so.

ill tell you what, go to another hosp or see another doctor!
they're dumb.
im a practicing nurse.
From the structure of you thumb it self, i can tell what kind of a fracture was it or if not (some cannot be noticed outside, aside from swelling) i can touch/feel it and tell you what's wrong.
coz if its "broken," like youve said, it'll be extremely obvious.
now...
if you dont see a bone sticking out, if the surrounding skin doesn't turn blue/red/violet and if its not a torn ligament..
then be comfortable with your splint for a while.
but dont worry too much!
