Can somebody please advise on arthroscopy recovery?!

Question: 6 months ago I tore my lateral meniscus, I had surgery 5 months ago which involved trimming the cartilage. I have started to get back into sport and I specifically I play american football. I still have some swelling in my knee, which is very minor but I cannot get rid of it. I have tried Rest Ice Compression Elevation but it is not working, and because of this I am unable to fully straighten my knee to the same extent as the other one. I have been told by my specialist that this is part of the recovery and to get back into playing sport...

After training I am having alot of pain down the back of my knee, it feels like something is very tight and happens if i have my leg bent for 5 minutes. I then struggle to get my leg straighten it.

I do alot of light weight reps, cycling on the machine, and I have started stretching alot more.

If anybody has any advice on what I can do to get rid of the swelling and what the pain in the back of my knee is, I would very much appreciate it.

Your knee is trying to tell you something...
I would back of from playing football for awhile.
Try swimming you can't hurt yourself in the water. It can strengthen your knee, leg muscles. Check out a sports medicine doc. They can help so much with strengthening and gently coming back from surgery. Most of the surgeon I have gone too either have hurried back to fast or not fast enough. Just depends.
Take the time to get it back right. You might have a lot of problems as you get older if you don't.

Patients and be gentle with you.
Take good care.

I had arthroscopic surgery exactly 2 years ago today believe it or not. Have you gone to physical therapy at all? I did not go after my surgery and even though my knee felt better I never regained the strength in my knee and injured it again a few times. I finally decided to give the physical therapist a shot and kept going which made a HUGE difference. My bad right leg hyper extends more than my left. I don't see why 5 months later you are having significant swelling or why you can't straighten your leg all the way. You need to try a good physical therapist. It's worth it.

I had a torn medial meniscus that was repaired during an arthroscopy. I went to the physical therapy right away and did everything they asked me to do. At least I tried. After 6 weeks of sheer torture my knee pain was worse than it had been before the surgery. Finally the surgeon told me to stop going to PT and just do some slow gentle stretches. It did settle down some after that but, it has never been as good as before the original injury.
