Well it doesn't hurt anymore than strep throat. Even a the day after you take pain pills so it doesn't hurt. You should be good.

Generally speaking it is no worse than a sore throat. It has been many, many years since my tonsillectomy, but I did not have any sever pain afterwards. Asprin, or tylenol should be enough to help you deal with the pain, but your doctor might prescribe something stronger.

Take it from an ENT nurse, it does hurt. After a tonsillectomy you CANNOT take aspirin due to the chance of bleeding. As long as you stay hydrated and swallow your saliva ( don't spit it out) the pain is decreased. You will be given pain meds such as Lortab, Tylenol, or Capitol with Codeine liquid along with antibiotics. At about day 5-14 your scabs will begin to fall off and expose nerve endings which will then refer the pain to your ears which will feel like an earache. When you can yawn without pain then you will know that you are healed!
