Can orthopedic surgeons prescribe pain medication?!

Question: I went to my family doctor for back pain and he did a little test on me & said he saw "a slight curve" of my spine and said I might have scoliosis so he is referring me to an orthopedic specialist. He prescribed me Darvocet and flexeril for pain until my appointment at the orthopedic doctor. After about a week of taking the darvocet I found that it didnt work hardly at all so I called my doctor and asked for something stronger but he said no. I think he thinks that my pain isnt as bad as I am saying. So when I go to the orthopedic doctor, can and will he prescribe me something stronger? I am only 21 so I think everybody thinks Im faking the pain but Im not. Any suggestions?

Yes, an ortho specialist can prescribe pain meds. You will need more tests done that the ortho doc will order, such as an MRI, to confirm the diagnosis. Did you take the muscle relaxer correctly? In the long run, it will help you more than any pain med. Darvocet is rather mild, so it doesn't surprise me that it didn't give you much relief. Back pain seems to hurt worse than just about any other body pain. You may also want to consider going to a chiropractor.

First Darvacet is a synthectic pain killer and soes not reoeive pain well Talk to your orthapedic and be honest with him he might give you hydrocodone 5 mg

Yes, having worked in an orthopedic office, I know for a fact they can. Tell them what has worked for you, what hasn't and they'll prescribe something suitable. Good luck!

Yes they can prescribe pain medication but Scoliosis doesn't typically require pain medication or a muscle relaxer ... I don't think your orthopedic surgeon is going to give you pain medication for that diagnosis either ... it is probable that you do have scoliosis but it is not what is causing you pain, most people don't even know they have it without an x-ray demonstrating it ...
