I'm the 24/7 caregiver to my ill husband and I'm dying for some time alo!

Question: We can't afford a caretaker, and none of our relatives live around here. Although I sympathize with him and want to do all I can, I feel like I'll go crazy if I don't get a break soon.

If your husband has guy friends, have one or two of them over to hang out with him and do guy stuff for a day while you do something nice/relaxing/fun by yourself or with your girlfriends. That way, he'll get some male-bonding time, and you get your much-needed break- and both of you will feel a little refreshed. If this works out, make it a monthly, biweekly, or weekly thing.

If he's not in a good condition to see friends, look up your community health resources. Try to find a nurse or aide who will come every so often so you can have personal time. Tell them your financial situation so they can try to make it affordable for you. See if your insurance will cover respite care, or if it's provided for free in your area.

It is very important for caregivers to have breaks.. not only do you deserve it, but you need it. I hope you find a solution to your situation!

Most States have a service a Home Health they pay to help caregivers. Contact DHS in your State or Social Security Office. I took care of my Mom and Home Health came three times a week to give her a shower and me a break. I could not of made it without them, and it was free here in Oklahoma.

Have you looked into home hospice? They can provide sometimes free services including spending some time with him so that you can have some time off.
