It's not known for sure. The biggest theory is that during sleeping the body paralyzes itself so as not to "act out" any dreams and thus cause possible injury. This mechanism can remain active after waking, alone with some connected sub-conscious area.
It is true that lying supine seems to facilitate these experiences, and can often be completely eradicated if the supine position can be avoided.
Some suggested methods to rouse oneself from SP are
Holding Breath.
Inward Screaming (scream in your head)
Become Hyper Aware, feel the bed beneath you, try to smell things, listen to outside sounds, try to judge the temperature on your face etc...
