Answers: Also, any details on why drinking lots of water fast works would be appreciated.

People get the hiccups from taking in to much air. For example when you are laughing you sometimes get them. Also drinking water helps because it levels out the air you took in: that is why holding your breath also works.

I get them from drinking something too fast, or eating too quick. or when i laugh really hard! They suck, and they hurt when i get them!

it has to do with your diaphram not settling.

the only thing that works for me is brown sugar in warm water. you don't have to drink it fast. enjoy the sugary conco*HIC*tion.

Air bubble in the bottom of your throat

i get hiccups when i laugh too much

Q: Why do you get hiccups and how do you cure them?

A: Hiccups are an annoying and sometimes debilitating condition that affects people of all ages. Indeed, hiccups can occur before birth and are frequently observed during routine ultrasound of pregnancy.

The cause of hiccups is unclear, but most cases appear to result from poor eating habits, such as eating too fast or eating hot spicy meals. Stress is also a common cause. In fact, any process that can cause irritation to the nerves supplying the diaphragm (main breathing muscle) is capable of causing hiccups. A hiccup can be regarded as a twitch of this muscle.
Some chronic conditions that affect the body's metabolism - such as an overactive thyroid, kidney failure and chronic indigestion - may lead to intractable hiccups. A visit to your doctor may be indicated.

Most cases of hiccups respond to simple measures such as:
Holding your breath or rebreathing into a paper bag
Swallowing ice-cold liquids and/or taking an antacid mixture.
Other remedies not always successful include:
Leaning forward and pulling up your knees to compress your chest
Having a hot milk drink.

Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between your vocal cords snaps shut to check the inflow of air and makes the hiccup sound. Irritation of the nerves that extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups.

Air can not get outta you so you breath in a lot. But you do not realize you are letting out a lot of air too.

Because sometimes when your breathing becomes irregular (like if you are laughing a lot or something like that) your uvula (the dangle thing in your mouth) wiggles and it makes hiccups. i personally dont think water really helps but maybe.

you get the hiccups when you have a lack of oxygen to your brain. taking deep breathes ususaly works.

this usually happens when you eat or laugh the beat of something in body gets set off because the laughing and it has an uneven beat so whenever it beats or whatever it makes you hiccup. i dont know something like that...

unbalanced lung activity of exerting your muscles in various ways to keep fit

you can hold a glass of water upside down in your mouth by binding over but no i dont no why but my uncle had them since he was 4 but he did cause he was not breathing right @ age 31

It's all phycological...I do not know how...though if you do have the hiccups, think about how many door hinges you have in your house...It tottally works.

Hiccups are caused by eating or drinking too fast. Now drinking water really fast after this I don't get, weird. :)

you get them becasue there is to much oxygen going to your brain. that is why you hold your breath to get rid of them

when you have a spasm in your diaphram because of a wierd breath

I've heard people get the hiccups when they are really worried about something.

A cure I've tried is eating a teaspoon of peanut butter xD
