You're not alone. My mind races, I can't shut it off when it's time to sleep. I worry about stuff I have no control over. I've been like this since I was a teenager.

I've tried melatonin, valerian, herbal tea, and over the counter sleep aids. The only thing that really works well for me is Ambien CR.

Over the counter stuff didn't really help me fall asleep or stay asleep, and they made me groggy all the next day.

Ambien CR is great because it knocks me out and keeps me asleep. And in the morning, I feel like I had a good night's rest, not hungover. The instructions say to allow at least 8 hours, but it only really keeps me asleep for 5 to 6 hours - better than nothing!

I tried Lunesta too, but it gave me headaches.

I don't take Ambien every night. I take it like every 3rd night, because I don't want to become addicted. So at least every 3 nights I get some sleep.

I know exactly what you're going through, and I hope you find something that helps you.

You should see a doctor and possibly a psychiatrist. what you described is a common thing among many of my friends with Obsessive Cumpulsive disorder. you may have a mild form.

also a doctor can check to make sure there isnt any underlying cause of the insomnia. I also have insomnia and have found that even exercising doesnt help me to sleep. Most of the OTC sleep meds are addictive and they work by nocking you out so you dont get restful sleep.

some of the newer perscription drugs can help and if you do have OCD there are some meds that can help as well.

The only two home remedies i have used for me(I dont have the $$ to see any doctor)

1)Something is probably troubling you, find out what it is and try to solve the issue

2)Work up a sweat, run, lift get tired and sore....even if you have trouble sleeping a nice exhausting workout can do wonders. It has even taken myself to job 10 miles in a day to get me to sleep, but its a start.

of course if you do have the $$ or insurance to seek professional help, then i agree with the answerers above me.

i never recommend using night time meds even if they are over the counter to solve a problem(especially if the symptoms are feeling arent what those are prescribed for), even NyQuil can be addicting..especially if it helps you get into a deep sleep.

Usually this can be solved mentally rather than physically.
