I need some advice from a physical therapist please?!

Question: Exactly one month ago I injured my upper back around the trapezius area by lifting my 35lb son an awkward way. I saw the doctor a few days later who had me take a round of cortisone and some muscle relaxers. It was a bit better the next week, I could tell the inflammation was gone. But within another week it was back to the original pain level.

I put in another call to her last week, she called in a few pain pills and says if it doesn't get better I will be referred to an orthopedic doctor.

I am a stay at home Mom and EVERYTHING I do is aggravating this muscle. The pain radiates from the trapezius muscle, up my neck and sometimes over to the shoulder. I have been using Tiger Balm Pain Patches twice daily. The pain meds make me sick to my stomach.

I need some advice on how I can heal myself. I am an active person and can never "rest" the area. Are there any exercises I can do? Or do you think it is best to go see the orthopedic doctor and get their opinion?

Thanks a lot!

If your pain has gone on this long, most likely it is not a muscle. Muscles have a very good blood supply and typically feel better within a few days...not weeks or months. We often look to a "derragement" (a physical therapy term) or an alteration in the normal resting position of the joint, in otherwords, when pain behaves the way you describe (radiates and is aggrevated by certain mechanical movements)

One of the above posters is correct, posture correction and good body mechanics will be helpful.

There are probably specific exercises that will help you, but it is impossible to tell without physically examining you. Physical therapy would be ideal...especially from someone who is trained in mechanical diagnosis and therapy ( http://www.mckenziemdt.org ). Most often, the problem can be helped in 6 visits or less. There is really no need to see an orthopedist unless you have pain that radiates all the way to the fingers, is constant, is accopanied by focal or widespread weakness and/or is present in both arms.

However, if you want a head start, I'd recommend this reading to you: "Treat your own neck" by Robin McKenzie.

Rest it!!, eat high protein foods, try the stretch below! But most importantly see the Orthopaedic Doc.

The best medicine is prevention! Load close to the body, back straight, lift with your legs!

hey there. the best thing to do is to go see a orthopedic doc!
or u can go see tuina(chinese one).
i guess u must have really pull a muscle!
the pain is connected all the way to ur side of the neck!
it also have affected the nerves too.
please try not to carry any heavy thing again!
please try to have a lot of rest!
or for the moment u can try to get an analgesic cream to release the pain!
please no more exercise!
gd luck.
God bless.
