Any Doctors around? Mercury concern - An energy saving light bulb broke in my da!
Question: A few months ago an energy saving light bulb broke in my 5 year old daughter's bedroom. I had no idea that they contained mercury, and just swept up the glass in the normal way. Now I have heard I should have done things differently. Is one such incident likely to have caused any health problems?

Most Modern Energy Saving light bulbs contain an average of 2 to 3 mg of mercury, such small quantities are unlikely to cause any harm; tests show that quantities between 1.5 and 44mg can cause minor chest pains after an exposure of around 7 hours of immediate contact with the substance. A small exposure time to a small amount of the substance shouldn't cause any harm.
Not at all! It shouldn't have contained enough to hurt her. If you saw a puddle of mercury on the floor then you have a concern .
Unless every bit of mercury got into her system she should be alright.
