Do you know anybody with a prosthetic limb?!

Question: My little brother is the only person I know with a prosthetic limb. (Bad car accident, I won't go into the details). He's only small, and it doesn't seem to upset him much, but it must be quite hard for him being different from everyone else.

So, I was wondering - do you have a prosthetic limb, or know anyone with one? How did it happen? Any funny stories? (He likes to make his leg "fall off" when we have guests - he thinks it's funny). I'd like him to be able to see that there are other people like him around.

Thanks so much!

My pal Wally. He has lost both legs at the hip but is a carer for his wife who has dementia. He is just so cheerful, I ask him how he pumps up the tyres in his wheelchair and he says he has a foot pump.
More power to his elbow!

i know someone with a prosthetic leg, sorry no funny story ,a very bad car crash.

My uncle. Lost it in a car crash when a teenager. He was trying to get a girl out of his car. It stalled on train tracks and train was coming. Girl freaked and froze. He got her out of car but when train his car, the bumper caught his leg. No more leg.

I've known several people with prosthetic legs, two who were young.

Bill lost his in a battle between swimmer and motorboat. Michaela lost hers in a car accident. Both these people were 10-13 when it happened. Both went on to become student leaders, popular, and Michaela became a successful professional, with a lovely family. Bill seemed to be headed that direction, too, but he had bouts of depression. I've lost touch with him and his name's too common to google to see what became of him.

I know a woman with an artifical lower leg. She lost it by playing silly B's around moving trains as a teenager.
About the worst thing that's happened to her since was when she broke the hinge on the prosthetic foot whilst boarding a bus.

Now she holds an Deep Sea Masters' Certificate (honest) and works for Greenpeace.

Occasionally (every 6 or 7 years) she has to have the ampuation site "re-sectioned". This is an awkward procedure that means hospitalisation for several days because it's effectively a new amputation. It has to be done to accommodate wear and tear, growth etc.
