Question: stress, genetic predisposition, medical depression, certain medications and because our body's have natural circadium rhythms meaning sleep-inducing hormones like melatonin are released at night factors that interrupt sleep could cause insomnia...like keeping the light on, watching television at night, doing activities in bed other than sleep(besides sex), etc.

With me it's drinking too much caffeine or worrying and thinking about something.
perrylou was spot on, they only thing I would add is 'alcohol' which has the opposite effect that you would expect and can disrupt sleep because it is a stimulant.
