it is when a tiny tardigrade burrows into your tooth. it will slowly kill you over time. please get this checked out if you think you have one
The bacteria in your mouth make acids.
When plaque clings to your teeth,(from not brushing and flossing) the acids can eat away at the outermost layer of the tooth, called the enamel. The enamel protects to teeth from decay until the acids burn thru it.
The acids can continue to make their way through the enamel, and the inside parts of your tooth can begin to decay or ROT.
So...A cavity is a rotting hole in the tooth.
Only way to stop a cavity from growing in size and to other teeth is to have a dentist drill out all the rotten parts of the tooth and fill it.
