When I needed a root canal, they drilled through the tooth.
If the crown cannot be easily removed, then the root canal will be done through the crown. I always attempt to remove the crown intact first before consider drilling through the crown. Some dentists, however, will not even attempt to take the crown off depending on the type of material it is made of. All porcelain crowns are almost impossible to remove without damage while those with metal cores or all metal are easier because they are more durable.
