Questions on Novocaine?!

Question: Questions on Novocaine!?
I was wondering if you could tell me everything you know about Novocaine!. What I really need to know is the systematic name and the sterochemistry, as well as how often it is used today, and what other medicine is out there that is like Novocaine, but only better!. Also anything that you feel you should add such as pros and cons of novocaine usage and as well as side effects, please feel free to do so!. Also can I get your full name and the location of your practice so I can properly cite you in my research paper as well as send you a "Thank You" card down the road!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's been a long time since I was in school but I think I can partially answer your question!. Novocaine is no longer used in the dental practice!. Novocaine is the only alpha blocker in the "caine" family!.
Lidocaine or carbocaine are the 2 most routinely used anesthetics in the dental office!. Both are beta blockers!.
The reason the dental office stopped using novocaine is because it is more likely to cause an allergic reation in the patient!.
Lidocaine usually contains epinephrine which is both a vasoconstrictor and and a vasodialator!. The vasoconstrictor helps reduce blood flow in the mouth during dental work!. The vasodialator causes the heart to feel as if it is racing!.
Carbocaine is the anesthetic of choice if the patient has a history of hypertension or heart disease because it does not contain epinephrine!.
I could be confused about which is the alpha blocker and which is the beta blocker!. Start your research there!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Oh goodness, lidocaine is NOT a beta blocker!!! It blockes the Na-channels, which is why it induces local anesthesia (beta blockers do NOT do that LOL)!.

Lidocaine and novocaine are all called "caines" because they are amides and, just like cocaine, are local anesthetics!.

Hope this clears the confusion!
