Question: Why does it hurt so much more to get a wisdom tooth removed than a regular tooth!?
I was wondering, why does it hurt so much more to get a wisdom tooth removed than a regular tooth!? How come when you get a regular tooth removed, it is just a little painful, then its over, but with a wisdom tooth, you are put to sleep, you take pain meds, it swells, you need ice!? How are they that different!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

We all have wisdom teeth and some people can go through all of their life without having any problems with them at all, but then some people can have wisdom teeth which can cause them no end of bother, it's the luck of the draw really!.

In some cases a dentist might act in foresight of a wisdom tooth causing problems in the future, but sometimes the problems have already started!.

These are when the wisdom teeth have become impacted, and there are basically 4 different types of impactions, they are when a tooth grows forward, when a tooth grows backward, when a tooth doesn't come through the gum line and when a tooth grows at an angle causing the roots to interfere with another tooths roots, this is where a lot of the major problems can arise and sets the wisdom tooth extraction aside from the regular tooth extraction!.

For example when you have a regular tooth out, the dentist might at some point touch the nerve of the tooth being extracted, but once extracted, the only tenderness experienced should really be a sore gum where it has been manipulated by the dentist to get the tooth out!.

If a wisdom tooth has become impacted in such a way, the roots might be growing around other roots, these other roots will be tampered with by the dentist to extract the problematic tooth, leaving the ok tooth/teeth still in the patients mouth but with a potentially throbbing root/roots!.

The pain from this interferece can sometimes be unbearable and this is why patients are sometimes anaesthetised!.

I'm just really glad that i've been lucky enough to not have had any problems because i bloody hate going to the dentist, i used to bite his hand and didn't even realise i was doing it i was that nervous, poor man!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ya, I agree with what has been said!. Also, often times wisdom teeth can grow horizontally so they actually have to dug out a huge chunk of your gums just to be able to get them out!. Another point is that usually they take at least 2, if not 4 of your wisdom teeth out at the same time so thats 4 x the pain!Www@Answer-Health@Com

They're back farther in your mouth, so it's more "traumatic" getting to it and pulling it!. They also have deeper roots and often they don't grow in as straight (or completely) like your other teeth, so that causes more complications sometimes!. They can also run closer to your nerves!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
